Matthew Norman 8 Day Timepiece Corniche Miniature Carriage Clock

£299.00

A lovely miniature carriage clock, of the Corniche style, by Matthew Norman of London.

Established in the 19th century, the Matthew Norman perpetuates a tradition of carriage clocks. Legend has it that Napoleon I – exasperated by the tardiness of his officers, which almost caused him to lose a battle – made the use of a carriage clock obligatory in the army.

It is difficult to date some of these clocks as the quality has not changed over the years, but I would estimate this clock to be manufactured around the turn of the 20th Century.

The movement is serviced and in great condition, keeping time very well.

The case has been left in its original condition, with a lovely patina, although there is a mark to the base on the right hand side. The glass panels are all in good condition. The dial is free from cracks and chips.

The original key is missing, but two replacements come with the clock.
